Cross training in Martial Arts will help your child excel in team sports. With any team sports there are sport specific training methods, to aid the athlete in whatever their sport may be. This is true even with Martial Arts, what is beneficial about martial arts training is that exercises designed to improve the martial athlete benefit the entire body. For example the practice of the round house kick (a kick designed to strike horizontally, to generate the rotational force in the hip and back, can easily translate to a soccer style kick, or a field goal kick in football. Another example would be the basic cross (rear hand punch) follows very closely to the path a baseball player would use to throw a ball.
A great example of this is one of my students, who attends Bergenfield high school, and is also a grappling team member, recently had to compete in her school’s annual fitness competition. In her age, and gender, she was able to out run, and out sit-up all the girls in her high school. This she and her mother attributed to the time she put in training in her martial arts.
