Muay Thai Olympic Recognition

The World Muaythai Council (WMC) and the International Federation for Muaythai Amateur (IFMA) organised a joint workshop to take muaythai to the highest recognition, to become recognised by the IOC.

Over 300 guests from government, National Olympic Committee of Thailand, the honourable General Yutthasak Sasiprapa, representatives from the National Culture Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangkok City, press, promoters etc., were in attendance.

The Privy Councillor General Pichitr Kullavanijaya opened the event, followed by a fantastic speech from Deputy Prime Minister, Maj. Gen. Sanan Kajornprasart pledging the Thai government’s full support for the project.

The President of the WMC General Chetta Thanajaro also pledged full support and all leading Thai promoters were present.

Bangkok Deputy Governor Thaya Teepasuwan expressed her joy for the implementation of muaythai for schools program, which will kick off in the coming months in over 400 schools in Bangkok, under WMC and IFMA. Dr. Santiparp Tejawanich, former governor of the Sport Authority of Thailand and advisor to the President of the OCA outlined the responsibilities of IFMA internationally and the much needed support from Thailand.

The President of IFMA Dr. Sakchye Tapsuwan outlined IFMA’s standing in the world sport family and a 2-year plan for the promotion of muaythai both nationally and internationally.

IFMA General Secretary Stephan Fox also made a presentation on the international muaythai, the IFMA board, it’s activities and future plans including the upcoming SportAccord Combat games in Beijing.

The workshop was highly successful as all relevant parties agreed to fully support IFMA on its road towards IOC recognition.
