UFC 144 in Japan was a tremendous card with some comebacks and great stories of fighters hoping to make their mark in the return to Land of the Rising Sun. The main event buzzed with the “Rocky Balboa” of MMA, Frankie Edgar versus the much bigger Benson Henderson? When the smoke cleared, the judges gave the fight to the seemingly unbattered Henderson. But wait, twitter was clamoring with fans and UFC veteran fighters from former Pride/UFC Champion Dan Henderson to Fighter/analyst Kenny Florian claiming their scorecards had Edgar with the win. Heck even President Dana White said he believed the New Jersey native won the close fight.
This blog is not about who should have won, but the following. Damage was the key. I suppose. If takedowns weren’t enough (5 to 1 Edgar winning that), what about those other matches won on just 1 key takedown. Then it was the sub attempt on Benson right? There was an article that Benson has escaped COUNTLESS sub attempts on him. Doesn’t that mean he has had too many attempts and he should have then lost all those fights? No doubt the damage came from the well timed up kick Henderson credited to “Cowboy” Cerrone. Was there more damage from that. Watch Frankie’s previous fights and see. But to watch the UFC 144 fight again without commentary will show more I suppose.
I am again not saying who won. just bringing up the points that others are asking. Here are the next two which must be grouped together.
Should Frankie now drop a weight class because of this loss like many are suggesting to him?
Should Frankie be granted an immediate rematch?
First, Frankie is not a fluke and shut down nay sayers it against BJ Penn and Maynard, which in a true champ fashion gave them their shot to prove it. More than once. So why is it that he fights a “controversial loss” and he not granted the same? In the video below he says he “doesn’t want to stand in anyone’s way (at the title) , but its what’s right”. I happen to agree. What do you think?
